About This Problem
A single click when you turn the key usually means the starter solenoid is getting a signal, but not enough current reaches the starter motor. That points to the battery, the cables, or the starter itself.
Turn the key and just get a click? Call Ethan and talk through it before you buy a new starter.
Call 786-351-5363Most Common Causes
These are the causes we find most often.
Weak battery
The most common cause. Voltage collapses under load.
Corroded or loose cables
Corrosion at the terminals or a loose ground stops current.
Starter solenoid
A failed solenoid clicks but doesn’t engage.
Bad starter
Starters corrode and seize, especially on outboards.
Neutral safety switch
No click at all can mean the controls aren’t reading neutral.
What We’ve Found on Real Jobs
From Ethan’s job log across South Florida.
Bad starters
Starters replaced on a Mercury 300 V8, a 27 ft Sea Ray, and many outboards.
Bench testing
We bench test starters to confirm they’ve failed before we replace them.
Battery cables
Bad battery cables caused a no-start on a Yamaha 115.
Start solenoid
A bad start solenoid on a Yamaha 225 replaced.
What You Can Check Before You Call
- Battery switch on and batteries charged
- Cable ends tight and clean
- Controls in neutral
- Try the other battery bank
When to Call
If it still clicks with a known good battery, the starter or solenoid likely needs replacing. Call and we’ll test it.
No call center. No front desk.
When You Call, the Owner Picks Up
Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.
Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Ethan knows Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, and the rest of what runs in South Florida inside and out, so you’ll usually get a straight answer on the first call, whether that’s something you can check yourself or a visit to your dock.

Frequently Asked Questions
The battery is good but the boat engine won’t turn over. Why?
A charged battery can still fail under load, and corroded cables, a bad ground, a failing solenoid, or a worn starter all cause the same click. We load test the battery and check the starter circuit on site, then fix it at the dock.
Is it the battery or the starter?
Try a known good battery or jump it. If it still clicks, it’s likely the cables, solenoid, or starter.
Can you replace a starter at my dock?
In most cases, yes.
Why does my boat click only sometimes?
An intermittent click often means a loose or corroded connection or a starter that’s starting to fail.
