Boat Fuel System Repair at Your Dock

Most of the running problems we see start with fuel. Water, old fuel, and clogged filters starve the engine, and the symptoms look like a lot of other problems. We test the fuel system step by step and fix the cause, not just the symptom.

When You Call, the Owner Picks Up

Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.

Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Ethan knows Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, and the rest of what runs in South Florida inside and out, so you’ll usually get a straight answer on the first call, whether that’s something you can check yourself or a visit to your dock.

  • Straight answers, not a script
  • Diagnostic questions answered on the phone
  • Honest advice, even when the fix is simple
  • The person you talk to is the one who shows up

Real Fuel System Jobs

Water in the fuel

"Always check your fuel. You don't want to get stuck offshore." Water in the fuel is one of the most common problems Ethan finds.

Clogged fuel injectors

A Yamaha 150 running rough and a Suzuki 90 losing RPM were both traced to clogged injectors and high-pressure filters. Both ran like new afterward.

VST filters

A Suzuki 115 had a lack of power, fixed with a VST service. We also do VST filters on triple Yamaha 300s.

Shutting down at high RPM

A Suzuki 300 shut down at higher RPM. The cause was a clogged fuel pickup.

Fuel pump on the water

A failed fuel pump was replaced on the water right before New Year's.

Boat Fuel System Repair FAQs

How does water get in boat fuel?

Condensation in a partly empty tank, a bad fuel fill or vent, or contaminated fuel from the dock. Keeping the tank full when the boat sits and changing your fuel/water separator regularly helps prevent it.

How often should I change my fuel/water separator?

Check it every 50 hours and replace it at least once a year or every 100 hours. Change it right away if you see water in the bowl.

Why does my outboard lose power at high RPM?

A fuel restriction is the most common cause: a clogged filter, a dirty VST filter, weak injectors, a failing fuel pump, or a clogged pickup tube. We've found clogged pickup tubes even on brand-new boats.

Can a boat that sat for years be brought back?

Often, yes. We have cleaned injectors, fuel pumps, plugs, cap and rotor on an engine that had sat for 13 years and got it running again.
