Water Pump Impeller Replacement at Your Dock

The water pump impeller is a small rubber part that keeps the whole engine cool. When it wears out, the engine overheats, and in salt water that can mean serious damage. We replace impellers on outboards, sterndrives, and inboards where your boat is kept.

When You Call, the Owner Picks Up

Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.

Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Ethan knows Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, and the rest of what runs in South Florida inside and out, so you’ll usually get a straight answer on the first call, whether that’s something you can check yourself or a visit to your dock.

Why Impellers Fail

  • Age: rubber dries out and cracks, even if the boat rarely runs
  • Running dry: starting the engine out of the water, or with a closed seacock
  • Sand and debris: shallow water and running aground chew up the vanes
  • Sitting: vanes take a set and stop pumping well

Impellers We Replace

Outboard water pumps

Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, and Honda outboards. We drop the lower unit, replace the impeller and the wear parts in the pump kit, and check the water passages.

MerCruiser sterndrives

Alpha One and Alpha Gen II drive water pumps, and the engine-mounted raw water pumps on Bravo setups.

Volvo Penta and inboards

Volvo Penta sterndrive and inboard raw water pumps, including belt-driven pumps.

Signs Your Impeller Needs Replacing

  • Weak or no tell-tale stream
  • Temperature gauge climbing
  • Overheat alarm
  • Steam or hot exhaust
  • More than a year since the last impeller change

Real Impeller Jobs

Burnt impeller on a low-hour Yamaha

A 2019 Yamaha with 150 hours in six years. The owner thought low hours meant no service, and the impeller was burnt.

Impeller pieces in the cooler

A MerCruiser that kept overheating had an old failed impeller. Its pieces were packed tight inside the cooler and had to be cleared out before the engine would run cool.

Water Pump Impeller Replacement FAQs

How often should a boat impeller be replaced?

Most manufacturers call for a new water pump impeller every year or every 100 to 300 hours, depending on the engine. In South Florida, change it at least every year or two even if the boat barely runs, because rubber impellers dry out, crack, and take a set from sitting.

How do I know my impeller is bad?

A weak or missing tell-tale stream on an outboard, a rising temperature gauge, or an overheat alarm. On inboards and sterndrives, watch for a temperature that climbs at idle or under load.

How much does impeller replacement cost?

It depends on the engine. Outboard impellers are in the lower unit, and the gearcase has to come off to reach them. MerCruiser Bravo engines use an engine-mounted raw water pump. Alpha drives have the pump in the drive, so the drive comes off. Call with your engine and you’ll get a quote.

Where is the impeller on a MerCruiser?

On Alpha drives, the water pump is in the outdrive. On Bravo setups, the raw water pump is on the engine itself. We’ve seen a drive pulled by someone looking for a Bravo impeller that was never there.

What happens if an impeller fails?

The engine overheats, and broken vanes travel into the cooling system. We’ve found coolers packed with old impeller pieces. Every vane has to be found and removed, or the engine keeps running hot.
