Service Interval Questions

How often should outboard engines be serviced?

Every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. That’s the rule for Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, and Honda four-strokes. Bigger services come at 300 and 1000 hours. Most South Florida boats reach a year before they reach 100 hours, so the service ends up being yearly.

Is the Yamaha 100 hour service every year or every 100 hours?

Whichever comes first. If you run 60 hours in a year, it’s due at the one-year mark. If you run 100 hours by June, it’s due in June.

Do I need to service my Yamaha outboards every 100 hours?

Yes, or every year if that comes first. Yamaha’s maintenance schedule is built around it. Keeping a record of each service also helps with warranty claims and resale.

What are the dangers of going over the 100 hour service on a Yamaha outboard?

Going a little over won’t ruin the engine. But the longer it goes, the more the risks add up. A worn impeller can overheat the engine, water can get into old gear oil and wreck the lower unit, worn anodes let corrosion set in, and old fuel filters can starve the engine of fuel. Skipping scheduled services can also complicate a warranty claim.

How often should I replace a gimbal bearing?

Check and grease it every year. Many owners replace it along with the bellows every 2 to 3 years. If you hear grinding or rumbling from the drive, especially in turns, have it replaced right away.

How often should I replace my boat battery?

Every 3 to 5 years for a lead-acid or AGM battery in Florida heat. Lithium batteries last longer. Replace it sooner if the engine cranks slowly or the battery won’t hold a charge overnight.
