About This Problem
An engine that shakes, misfires, or idles rough is telling you one cylinder isn’t doing its share. The cause is usually spark, fuel, or compression. We use computer diagnostics and compression testing to find which.
Engine stumbling or misfiring? Call Ethan and describe it. How it runs tells him a lot.
Call 786-351-5363Most Common Causes
These are the causes we find most often.
Worn or fouled spark plugs
Old plugs misfire. We’ve seen motors that went 195 hours since their last service with a bad plug causing a misfire.
Clogged injectors
Weak injectors cause rough running and loss of RPM.
Ignition parts
Coils, plug wires, and on inboards the cap and rotor.
Water in the fuel
Water causes stumbling and misfires.
Idle air control
A bad IAC causes rough or unstable idle on fuel-injected inboards.
Low compression
A cylinder down on compression runs rough no matter what else you replace.
What We’ve Found on Real Jobs
From Ethan’s job log across South Florida.
Misfire after 195 hours
A Yamaha with a misfire hadn’t been serviced since 2021, 195 hours earlier. A bad spark plug was the cause.
Rough running Yamaha 150
Clogged injectors. Cleaned and back running smooth.
Running rough, new plugs
A motor running rough was fixed with new spark plugs.
One engine rough
One engine running rough was low on compression.
What You Can Check Before You Call
- When the plugs were last changed
- Water in the separator bowl
- Any warning lights or alarms
- Whether it’s rough at idle, at speed, or both
When to Call
Rough running often gets worse. Call before a misfire damages a piston or leaves you stuck.
No call center. No front desk.
When You Call, the Owner Picks Up
Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.
Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Ethan knows Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, and the rest of what runs in South Florida inside and out, so you’ll usually get a straight answer on the first call, whether that’s something you can check yourself or a visit to your dock.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should spark plugs be changed?
Follow your engine maker’s schedule, usually every 100 to 300 hours. Many misfires we see come from plugs that were never changed.
Can you tell which cylinder is misfiring?
Yes. Computer diagnostics and a compression test usually point to the cylinder.
Is it safe to run a misfiring engine?
Short distances at low speed, if you must. Running it hard can cause more damage.
