About This Problem
The tell-tale stream shows water is moving through the engine. A weak or missing stream doesn’t always mean the engine is overheating, but it’s a warning to take seriously.
Weak or no pee stream? Call Ethan before you run it hot.
Call 786-351-5363Most Common Causes
These are the causes we find most often.
Clogged tell-tale hose
The most harmless cause. Salt or debris blocks the small outlet.
Worn impeller
A tired impeller pumps less water, especially at idle.
Blocked intake
Weeds, a bag, or growth over the lower unit intake.
Stuck thermostat
Corroded thermostats restrict flow.
Salt in the passages
Salt buildup in the cooling passages of engines that aren’t flushed.
What We’ve Found on Real Jobs
From Ethan’s job log across South Florida.
Clogged tell-tale on a Suzuki 350
A clogged water tell-tale on a Suzuki 350 was cleared and checked.
Burnt impellers
Impellers that skipped their yearly change come apart and send pieces into the cooling system.
Thermostats
Corroded thermostats replaced to restore flow.
What You Can Check Before You Call
- Clear the tell-tale outlet with a thin wire or a short blast of air
- Check the intake for weeds or bags
- Watch the temperature gauge
- Flush the engine with fresh water after use
When to Call
If clearing the outlet doesn’t bring the stream back strong, or the temperature rises, stop running it and call.
No call center. No front desk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a weak tell-tale an emergency?
Not always, but watch the temperature. If the stream doesn’t return after clearing it, have the water pump checked.
Why is my tell-tale stream warm?
Some warmth is normal. Hot water or steam means poor flow. Shut down and check.
How long does an impeller last?
About a year or 100 hours in South Florida conditions.
