About This Problem
Shifting problems can start at the helm or at the lower unit. On cable-controlled boats, corroded or stretched cables are common. On digital controls, a switch or actuator can fail. Damage in the gearcase can also cause it.
Won’t shift or shifts hard? Call Ethan and he’ll help you tell a cable problem from a lower unit one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my outboard hard to shift?
Usually corroded or misadjusted cables, or a worn lower unit.
Can digital controls fail?
Yes. Switches and actuators can fail. We diagnose them with the engine maker’s software.
Is it the lower unit?
If the controls move freely but the gear won’t engage, the problem may be in the lower unit.
