Outboard Won’t Trim Up or Down

Trim does nothing, only works one way, or the motor slowly drifts down? Here’s what usually fails, electrical or hydraulic.

Corroded outboard power trim unit

About This Problem

Trim problems are either electrical (the motor isn’t getting power or the trim motor has failed) or hydraulic (low fluid, a failed pump, or worn seals). A quick test tells us which side it’s on.

Trim stuck up or down? Call Ethan and tell him what you hear when you hit the switch.

Most Common Causes

These are the causes we find most often.

Relay or solenoid

Clicking but no movement often means a failed relay or solenoid.

Trim switch

Works from the cowl switch but not the helm, or the other way around.

Trim motor

Corroded trim motors burn out.

Low fluid or leaks

Leaking rams lower the fluid until the trim can’t lift.

Worn seals

The motor slowly trims down on its own when internal seals wear.

What We’ve Found on Real Jobs

From Ethan’s job log across South Florida.

Solenoid and motor

A Yamaha 250 trim solenoid and a bad trim motor on a Suzuki 140, both in one day.

Trim unit reseals

Twin Yamaha 350 trim units resealed with new trim motors.

Stuck at Crandon Park

A family was stuck at Crandon Park with a bad trim pump. We got them going.

Leaking trim rams

Leaking trim rams on Mercury Verados resealed.

What You Can Check Before You Call

  • Try both the helm and cowl trim switches
  • Listen for a click or the motor running
  • Check fluid level in the trim reservoir
  • Look for fluid leaking from the rams

When to Call

If the motor is stuck down and you’re in shallow water, use the manual release valve to tilt it up, then call.

No call center. No front desk.

When You Call, the Owner Picks Up

Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.

Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Ethan knows Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, and the rest of what runs in South Florida inside and out, so you’ll usually get a straight answer on the first call, whether that’s something you can check yourself or a visit to your dock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my trim click but not move?

Usually a failed relay or solenoid, or a trim motor that has failed.

Why does my outboard trim down by itself?

Worn internal seals let fluid bypass. A reseal usually fixes it.

Can you fix trim without hauling the boat?

Often, yes. Many trim repairs are done at the dock.
