Water building up in the bilge of a sterndrive boat? A cracked bellows is one of the most common causes, and it can sink a boat at the dock.

About This Problem
Sterndrives use rubber bellows to seal the transom where the driveshaft, exhaust, and shift cable pass through. Rubber cracks with age and sun, and a failed driveshaft bellows lets water straight into the boat.

The largest bellows and the most serious leak.

A small bellows that cracks and drips.

Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.
Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Frequently Asked Questions
How often should bellows be replaced?
Every few years or at the first sign of cracking, since a failure can sink the boat.
Can bellows be replaced in the water?
No. The drive has to come off, so the boat is hauled out.
What else should be done with the bellows?
We check the gimbal bearing, U-joints, and engine alignment at the same time.
