Water in Boat Fuel

Water in the fuel is behind a huge number of stalls, no-starts, and power loss. Here’s how it gets in, how to spot it, and how we fix it.

Water in a boat fuel separator bowl

About This Problem

Water in the fuel is one of the most common problems we find. In South Florida heat and humidity, condensation forms in partly empty tanks, and ethanol fuel absorbs water. The engine runs fine until it pulls water, then stalls, misfires, or won’t restart.

Found water in your fuel? Call Ethan and he’ll tell you what to do before you run it again.

Most Common Causes

These are the causes we find most often.

Condensation

A partly empty tank breathes humid air, and water condenses inside.

Fuel fill or vent

A leaking fill cap or a vent that takes on water lets it straight into the tank.

Contaminated fuel

Bad fuel from the pump or a jerry can.

Ethanol phase separation

Ethanol fuel absorbs water and can separate in the tank.

What We’ve Found on Real Jobs

From Ethan’s job log across South Florida.

Water in fuel, saved the trip

An emergency call to replace fuel pumps saved a Bahamas trip.

Diagnostics, water in fuel

Lack of service is usually the reason for engine failure. Water in the fuel shut this one down.

Damaged fuel pump

Water in the fuel ruined a fuel pump and isolator boot. Water in fuel can cost you thousands.

Flushed and running

A fuel system with water in it was flushed and the boat was ready to go.

What You Can Check Before You Call

  • Look at the separator bowl: water sits at the bottom
  • Check the fuel fill cap O-ring
  • Keep tanks full when the boat sits
  • Change the separator every 100 hours or yearly

When to Call

If you see water in the bowl, don’t keep running it. Water damages fuel pumps and injectors. Call and we’ll clean out the system.

When You Call, the Owner Picks Up

Every call goes straight to Ethan, the owner of EG Marine Services and the mechanic who does the work. There’s no receptionist taking a message and no waiting on a callback from someone who’s never seen your boat.

Tell him what’s going on: the alarm on the display, the noise at idle, the engine that won’t turn over. Ethan knows Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, and the rest of what runs in South Florida inside and out, so you’ll usually get a straight answer on the first call, whether that’s something you can check yourself or a visit to your dock.
